Memories of Pop Music
I was flipping through channels today and saw this little clip with Natasha Bedingfield in it. It reminded me of a little story. I guess I should start this story with a little disclaimer. I usually hate pop music. Honestly, if you flip through my 7,500-odd songs on iTunes, very few (i.e. less than 30) would be pop. But one of the few truly poppy albums I own is Unwritten. I guess I’m just a sucker for Natasha Bedingfield.
Anyway, when I was in Scotland in 2004, I was living in Stirling. Every year, the BBC has a Children In Need telethon each year. They have various concerts throughout Britain, a big studio performance. Its really cool, and I think they raised something like £17 million when I was there. One of the concert venues was Stirling Castle, and my flatmate Annette went to school with the guitar tech for Snow Patrol (one of the bands playing at Stirling). She was able to get tickets for Jo, Eilidh, her and me, so we went.
To the meat of the story: Jo, who is definitely not a pop princess (nose ring, hair dyed black, etc) was saying that she knew that the camera would focus on her near the front row of this show dancing like a tit to Natasha Bedingfield, which she was doing. Lo and behold, not 5 minutes after Natasha Bedingfield left the stage, she got a text from one of her friends back in Mersey Side saying they saw her on TV dancing to Bedingfield and looking stupid while doing it. Hilarious (though, you probably had to be there…).
Maybe that’s why I like Natasha Bedingfield… Good memories.
On another note, the Discovery Channel shows a British car show named Top Gear. My flatmate Colin Turkington, a professional race car driver on the British Touring Car Circuit, was on it. My Irish flatmate on American TV. Quite awesome!
